Blacklisting reaction improved |
Posted by admin on Sunday, 24 April 2016 - 22:48 GMT

Since I noticed some script-kiddies to actually launch a distributed cross-site-scripting and directory traversal attacks, and at the same time spawn 5 to 10 jobs per site, the blacklisting reaction time needed to be shortened and enhanced.
What happens now is that the system not only reacts on par with the remote attackers request, but it also tells the firewall to directly terminate all active connections to the attackers IP address.
The first reports have shown that the first re...

for the site users, a pastebin module has been activated. It enables users to share code/log information - without relying on external sites for these informations. It can be accessed through the block on the top-right, or in the Applications menu.
- A data expiration function is automatically enabled (24Hours) so that the content expires. Data owners can reset the expiration date or completely delete the content if wanted.
- The provided link is then accessible by the confi...

How to stop Windows 10 upgrade on Win7/8 |
Posted by admin on Saturday, 9 January 2016 - 11:11 GMT

And yes, the possibility exists, and requires a modification of the local registry.
These are the steps to follow:
- Open the Registry Editor (search for regedit in the Start Menu and run it)
- Set DisableOSUpgrade to 1 in HKLMSOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftWindowsWindowsUpdate
- Set ReservationsAllowed to 0 in HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionWindowsUpdateOSUpgrade
Funny how the title does not really mention what is really done in the official doc...

ISP instability |
Posted by smurphy on Sunday, 11 October 2015 - 12:54 GMT

Seems that our ADSL 2+ line has become unstable - for whatever reason. After some investigation, I found out that all existing connections can still go through, however any new initiated connection fails. Also a ping.
I however also noticed that restarting the ADSL Modem forced the remote end to sync, and work again. So - wrote a little script that will monitor the connection to the ISP's gateway, and in case that one is not reachable, the ADSL Modem will be restarted.

Win 10 and total observation |

Since Microsoft has released Windows 10, many things have changed. Notably, you are now almost forced to upgrade your old Windows session (Win7, Win 8 and 8.1). Also, Microsoft now collects a complete set of data - and they call that telemetry and data analysis for cortana. Only, for that to work, all the data needs to be collected all the time, as eventually you can tell cortana to execute an action. Imagine the Microphone always active and listening sending the data out to Microsofts sy...

New NAS installed |
Posted by admin on Tuesday, 16 June 2015 - 21:54 GMT
|
|
As the CPU of the old NAS was really a limit to many things - a NAS found a new home - using a 2.2Ghz Xeon CPU, 16GB Ram, and the storage has been expanded to 8 usable TB (that can be expanded to 12. Currently Raid 5 + 1 with 4 disks).
Added a 120GB SSD drive for the OS, and a PCIe eSATA Card to attache the external monthly backup drive. This new NAS is based on a HP Microserver gen8.
The only bad thing about this is that they use ILO internally (As a kind of BIOS replacement), and it...

Firewall updated |
Posted by admin on Tuesday, 21 April 2015 - 22:40 GMT

The local firewall software has been updated. As it allows now to handle a timeout on blacklisted IP's, the entire code to feed the black-list has been simplified dramatically. This also means that way more sources of data will be fed to the blacklist processor, and the blacklisting will be also way faster than before.
Additionally, the firewall will also handle de-listing from the blacklist itself (time-based).

Harvester trap rewritten |
Posted by admin on Thursday, 12 February 2015 - 22:47 GMT
|

Over time, with every OS Version change, PHP and Apache and modules change, things also changed under the hood. That's how I noticed that when I first had written my Harvester trap to play around with PHP internal semaphore function, I had to adapt my code every time a change on the OS, PHP or apache happened.
Well, got fed up with that and decided to rewrite the function to work without the semaphore and got it running nicely.
So, dear bots, you are welcome to come back to my site, no...

MX Tools interface activated |
Posted by smurphy on Thursday, 29 January 2015 - 21:06 GMT
|
|
For some time now I have used the premise to always use a dedicated E-Mail Alias for every site I register to. Living by that rule, I always tend to tell all the users having an account on my server (mostly my family) to do the same. The drawback of this was that I became the personal admin of everyone and as Admins are known to be very lazy - it soon became a problem I wanted to outsource. Well - it has happened. the MX-Tools interface is available to registered users where they can take care o...

Localization added to phpPhobos |
Posted by smurphy on Sunday, 11 January 2015 - 14:08 GMT
|
|
Some base functions and modules have had localization added in German and French language.
The regular php/pot functionality has been used to add some translations. Some modules (private modules - aka. TimeSheet and Budget) were already localized. All that needed to be done was to find a way to also apply it to the rest of the code.
This has been achieved with most of the user-facing page code. Not all Admin-pagess have yet been adapted.
